"You just think about what you're going to do, young lady!"
Twenty-four states currently have laws requiring women to receive counseling (or, more accurately, "counseling") and then wait, usually for 24 hours, before they can obtain an abortion. Basically, it amounts to giving grown women a timeout -- and, according to a new analysis of existing research by the Guttmacher Institute, it has next to no effect at all. Except this: "Mandatory counseling and waiting period laws that require an additional in-person visit before the procedure likely increase both the personal and the financial costs of obtaining an abortion, thereby preventing some women from accessing abortion services."

Because a woman couldn't possibly have thought it over before seeing a doctor. Women being irrational and all.

It also means that women have to take more time off from work, which can be yet another difficulty.

Curious: I wonder how many of these same states have a 24 hour "cooling off" period before buying a handgun...Why do I suspect there'll be little or no overlap?

I know Nevada has a "cooling off" period of three days. I don't know what the abortion laws are.

This is why when women campaign for keeping Roe v. Wade, I have to ask "What Roe v. Wade? They killed that thing a long time ago."

It makes me especially glad I live on the state line, as my only reaction to Indiana's mandatory waiting period/"counseling" is, "Fuck you, I can WALK to Illinois in ten minutes."

"Mandatory counseling and waiting period laws that require an additional in-person visit before the procedure likely increase both the personal and the financial costs of obtaining an abortion, thereby preventing some women from accessing abortion services."

That's pretty much the point of those laws, though, isn't it? People who favor these laws can go "See, fewer abortions!" and sit back and cheer at the women being punished for being pregnant and not wanting to be Precious Babies Saved!

I mean I thought the precise and explicit purpose of those laws was to make abortion more difficult and expensive, thereby forcing women who couldn't afford a hotel room/extra day off work/whatever the issue is into giving birth. Did anyone claim they had another purpose?

If someone could just invent an aborting martini... Imagine, walking into a bar and ordering a '486 colada.
